Born in Toronto and raised in Winnipeg, Scott Nolan hasn’t been without an instrument in his hands as far back as he can remember. His efforts in several bands, including Leadhouse and Motel 75, soon directed him toward a strong solo career that has secured him in a place in the ranks of the country’s finest songwriters and performers.
In Scott Nolan’s former life he was a mercenary rocker but with time realized his natural talent was songwriting. His solo career has allowed him to strive for more depth and breadth in his songwriting, more in the tradition of singer songwriters he admires. Visiting Day observes Scott Nolan the songwriter exploring a family secret and how this secret influenced his life and his songwriting.
Scott’s cousin Patrick Nolan grew up in the Toronto Irish neighbourhood of Cabbage town. Patrick was the eldest of five children in a violent household. His father abandoned the family early in Patrick’s life. His mother soon after took her own life, leaving the children alone and abandoned. Patrick and his brother Rick took to the streets, by the age of sixteen, drink, drugs and boy’s homes led Patrick to an assault charge and a three year prison term. This set the course to a life outside the law.. Within a few years Patrick murdered a man and was sentenced to life in Folsom Prison.
Visiting Day retraces Scott Nolan’s side of the story and explores how his cousin influenced his songwriting from behind the walls of Folsom Prison. Which takes us on a memorable road trip to Folsom Prison to deal with this unfinished family business.
